Hokkaido Marathon 2026 — 20,000 runners through central Sapporo
The Hokkaido Marathon is the only major Japanese marathon run in summer, and it takes over central Sapporo on Sunday 30 August: about 20,000 runners, first wave at 8:30, second at 8:45, from the start/finish at Odori Nishi 4-chome on Ekimae-dori Avenue.
The 42.195 km course passes the Susukino crossing, Horohira Bridge, the Former Hokkaido Government Office (Red Brick Office) and Hokkaido University before returning to Odori; it is a JAAF/World Athletics-certified race and part of the MGC Series 2026-27 that feeds Japan's Olympic marathon trials. The time limit is 6 hours.
For everyone not running: central streets — including stretches of Ekimae-dori and Soseigawa-dori — close through the morning, and the subway is the way around town. Spectating is free anywhere on the loop; the finish stretch along Odori Park is the classic spot.
